This second movie in the Dreamworks version of Cressida Cowell's How To Train Your Dragon books is an efficient and entertaining franchise sequel, but it restates how conventionally Americanised this property has become in comparison with the literary original – far less quirky than Cowell's writing, and certainly less than her engagingly lo-fi Milliganesque illustrations. (This movie does, however, play on the fans' addiction to collecting the trading cards.) In this new episode, a few years on from the first, dragons and Vikings now live side-by-side on the island of Berk. But there is a sensational upset. They are menaced by an evil figure named Draco (voiced by Djimon Hounsou) and the young Viking hero Hiccup (Jay Baruchel) must come to a reckoning with his formidable mother Valka (Cate Blanchett). Dragonback action is very important, and as with so many 3D animations there is an inordinate amount of whooshing through the air and flying through the sky. The main legacy of 3D may come to be seen as the revival of aerobatics in film drama. It's attractive enough, though it's skating a little too close to the generic and bland.
