Don't Ask John Cho What's Going On With Star Trek 4
The Star Trek franchise is currently in a very interesting position. Much has been said about the development of the fourth installment in the current continuity, with many reports suggesting that critical figures may or may not return. With so much uncertainty, it sounds like you shouldn't bother asking Sulu actor John Cho about SJ Clarkson's Star Trek 4. In a recent interview, the actor explained:
So, at this point in time, John Cho still knows very little about the status of Star Trek 4. Moreover, he doesn't seem particularly interested in being involved in the decision-making process for the movie. Instead, he will just wait until the call is made and then go from there.
Though we still don't know too much about Star Trek 4, what we have heard is enticing nonetheless. Rumors have suggested that it would be a time travel movie following the adventures of James Kirk (Chris Pine) and his father George Kirk (Chris Hemsworth). The production recently ran into a snag with the departures of Pine and Hemsworth, but rumors related to the film suggest that it's still aiming to begin filming next year.
John Cho has played a pivotal role in the rebooted Star Trek franchise ever since J.J. Abrams took the lead on Star Trek back in 2009. Portraying the role of Sulu (the part made famous by George Takei in the original series back in the 1960s), Cho has been an instrumental member of the modernized Enterprise crew, appearing in Star Trek, Star Trek Into Darkness, and Star Trek Beyond. Cho also made headlines for his portrayal of Sulu in 2016's Beyond, as it was revealed that the character was gay in honor of original actor and LGBT icon George Takei.
I know very little about this. I've heard we're going to do one. But beyond that, I don't have details. I'd rather not know; I don't want to lie. The boring answer is to wait for the powers that be to decide. If there's a Star Trek phone tree, I'm not aware. We do write long letters to each other.
